FAQ

When should I book my wedding cake?
Try to order your Wedding Cake at least six months in advance to give us plenty of time to book you into our schedule. We cannot always accept orders for ‘last minute cakes’ but please enquire – we even surprise ourselves sometimes!

I don’t like fruitcake; can we have a sponge?
Yes, of course. You may choose any flavour you wish from a tried and tested chocolate fruit nut and biscuit cake (known as a fridge cake) for the chocoholics amongst us, lemon sponge with lemon butter cream, chocolate sponge with chocolate butter cream (or vanilla if you prefer), coffee sponge, coffee and walnut sponge with coffee butter cream, classic carrot cake with cream cheese filling the options are endless and we are happy to welcome your input for a new flavour option

Some couples like to have mixed tiers to cater for all tastes so you could have a bottom tier of 12″ Fruit Cake , 9″ Rich Chocolate sponge Cake and a 6″ Lemon sponge Cake on top, all decorated in a matching style, the fruit should be the bottom tier as it is much heavier than the sponges, that said though if you only want a token taster for the traditional Fruit Cake guests you can make the top tier a fruit…it just needs to be supported well and we can do that for you. Alternatively have the whole cake sponges and have an extra fruit cutting cake decorated in matching icing to cater for this and have the best of both worlds :-)

Can you decorate a cake made by my mum ?
Your Mum may have a favorite family Fruit Cake recipe and we would be delighted to complete the cake for you, sorry but we do not decorate customers sponges as the stability of your cake depends on a reliable sponge of uniform height and density. It is better to provide a completely UN-iced cake – no offence to your Mum’s culinary skills but we’ve had a few odd shapes to contend with in the past, but please please ensure the Fruit cake is thoroughly cooked, the best way to do this is using a warm skewer in the centre of the cake…if it comes out clean Listen to the cake….yes listen…No, I’m not mad… your cake will actually tell you when it is cooked, if you listen to your cake when it is cooking it will sizzle quietly, and when it is cooked…It stops sizzling :-) , use the warm skewer to double check, there is nothing more heart breaking that a beautifully mixed boozy fruity Fruit cake that is raw in the middle…It cant be used :-( even if you beg and swear the guests wont eat the middle bit, Bacteria have lived in that raw mix and spread into the rest of the cake and my reputation and your life is worth more than re baking a fruit cake…sorry :-S

Can we have fresh flowers?
We are happy to supply a plain iced cake and deliver this to your venue for your florist to decorate in a style to match your Wedding bouquets. Alternatively if you have not yet organized your flowers we have a wonderful florist Maria Dobbie you will find on our links page who would be delighted to discuss your flowers for your wedding day and also your cake.

Can we keep the top tier for an Anniversary?
Fruitcakes can only safely be kept for a few months once decorated and sponges need to be eaten within a week. It is possible to freeze cakes and then re-ice them for an anniversary, though you may prefer to do this with a larger, middle tier. Better still is to order a fresh Anniversary or Christening Cake made to the same delicious recipe!

How should I store sugarcraft bouquets and decorations?
These should be kept out of direct sunlight, which can fade colours. Ideally flowers need a dry environment with some air circulation, inside a glass cabinet would be ideal. Perspex containers can also be purchased so you can put your flowers on display and continue to enjoy them long after your Wedding, we would be happy to provide this service for you. just bring your undamaged figures to us and we will display them in a perspex case and even try to capture some of the essence of your cake if possible, figures that may have a little damage can sometimes be restored so don’t panic if an arm has been broken off, we have the power to rebuild them :-) ….If its not too bad :-S

I’ve chosen the design I want but I’m going to need a lot more cake to feed my guests.
Square cutting cakes can be provided, these will be covered in the same style as your main Wedding Cake and cut behind the scenes to provide extra slices for all your guests.

I’ve really set my heart on a three tier cake but we’ll never eat that much!
Certain tiers can easily be substituted for dummy cakes, which are iced in exactly the same way as the real cake, and no one will be able to tell the difference, so long as you don’t cut into the dummy at the reception!

I have seen a cake I would like in a wedding magazine can you make a replica for me?
We are happy to look at your pictures and inspirations and recreate the cake you have your heart set on as closely as possible

We hope this has helped with some of the questions you have but if you would like to pose any others please feel free to contact us.
